N°1 | 2014 THE CAST IRON RAILINGS

A huge number of railing types installed over one hundred years ago that are still in place. A priceless heritage

The magazine Arredo & Città, n.1/1990 was dedicated to railings. Even though the basic contents were outlined in that first study many years ago, we thought it was a good idea to use the material we have collected in the meantime. We refer to the many photographs taken all over Italy that show a huge number of railing types installed a long time ago that are still in place. We have also purchased other catalogues and we are able to identify the foundry of origin of some of the pieces that we couldn’t identify at the time.

In the first part of this text, we will explain the historical reasons for the interest that we have in railings, and the method we used to organise our materials. We feel that our research will never really be finished, and we are interested in continuing to study and integrate new materials.

In the second part, we broaden our field of vision and explore the different contexts. Historical and rural buildings, new residential buildings, luxury homes, hotels, restaurants, and stores can happily use this type of object because it integrates with the architecture when installed outdoors, and becomes a part of the interior décor if installed indoors. We also mention innovative projects that make us imagine even more original uses of this element that can be reproduced in classic versions or reinvented in brand-new, more contemporary shapes.
