N°2 | 2017 RETURN TO THE CENTRE

Plans, designs and know-how for upgrading the historic centre

Urban planning from the second half of the 20th century has given us historic cities that are protected and, for the most part, recovered. For these cities, one problem arises today: their “reactivation”, because of the sharp decline of interest by part of the population which chooses as a residence or as places to spend free time, areas more easily accessible and less expensive.

On the other hand, the increasing tourist attraction exerted by many cities has produced a strong pressure on the urban fabric, triggering a process of expulsion from the city centre of the residents, who prefer to use their properties in a receptive key. That’s how the city centre is always less a place of permanent residence and more a space of crossing by third-party users, present in temporary form: a phenomenon that contributes to the disarticulation of the relationship between a place and its Community.

In the monograph are described some significant urban projects of different approach, degree of extension and temporariness, in which the contemporary trajectories crossed with the history of the city.
