N°2 | 2014 BOOT SCRAPERS: FROM PAVEMENTS TO THE MUSEUM
Two different surveys illustrate how widespread were these objects in the last century
The boot scrapers were objects placed outside the doors to be used to clean one’s shoes before entering a home. From simple blades to richly decorated cast iron sculptures, there is an endless variety of shapes and styles. We are presenting two different articles on the subject: the first was a study done in Brussels, and the second is a survey conducted in a few districts in the city of Rome.
Finally we used catalogues of foundries in our Archives for reference to demonstrate how this object was a source of commercial importance to producers. Also, we found that the designs were much more beautiful and richly decorated than most of the boot scrapers that we can still see today.
