N°2 | 2021 A HERITAGE IN THE URBAN LANDSCAPES OF SICILY – Part One

The range of public lighting artefacts produced in Sicily is extremely rich, to the benefit of the cities and the small centres comprising the urban texture of the entire island. Apart from the quantity, it is remarkable that an industry in its earliest stages, as was that of iron casting in the mid-19^th century, should have expressed itself with a production so specifically conceived for the local market that it can be considered unique. This does not detract from the fact that numerous elements were also imported from other parts of Italy, as will be seen in the second part of this monograph, to be issued next year.

The abundant iconographic material, the nucleus of the research, was gathered directly on the field, scrutinizing the old town centres to identify artefacts bearing the marks of history. It is well reflected, too, in the historical postcards which show the same places and artefacts but with a different atmosphere.

The index of the subjects of this first part is completed, in the margin, by a brief reference to the subjects of the second part.
