N°2 | 2005 GAZEBO PEOPLE

Meeting-place and entertainment

The monography dedicated to bandstands continues with the analysis of the social role played by these buildings, which is also one of the reasons for their being so widespread in Europe and indeed worldwide. Providing a meeting place for music lovers who could not go to theatres or concert halls, the bandstand, principally designed as a recreational space, was also a means for spreading and divulging musical culture.

The second part of the feature focuses on Italy, with a series of specimens still standing today, the origins and history of which are reconstructed. The Italian bandstand invariably takes on a central role in public parks. The restoration of the building, where it happened, has allowed, if not the restoration of the ancient function of the past centuries, the renovation of the entire site and the preservation of a unique work, realized with mastery and worthy of being transmitted to posterity. The harmonious and aesthetically appealing forms of the gazebo are sufficient to motivate its presence in a public space.
