From redevelopment to regeneration: strategies for replanning the city layout
One of the things that town planning experts must do is to focus on the suburbs. This is true even more so because the term “suburbs” has gradually taken on a new meaning; a negative connotation that evokes the concept of urban decay.
Today urban regeneration is understood, firstly, as a recovery – not a cancellation – of what exists. This attitude is effectively measured by the numerous redevelopment projects for public housing complexes that are currently under way in different countries all over Europe.
Even in Italy, with greater difficulty, the culture is moving in this direction. The many projects presented here in our magazine are proof of this, and this material offers us quite a bit of food for thought. As suburbs are not static, and they will never be solved once and for all. The perspectives, provided by our authors through many case studies, help us to focus our attention and not neglect the processes that have been successful in the past.
