N°1 | 2019 ABRUZZO AND ITS CAST IRON FOUNTAINS

Towards a better touristic appreciation of the territory

The cast iron fountains of Abruzzo, produced between the mid-19th century and the beginning of the 20th: a unique heritage, without equal in Italy, and one that risks being lost for lack of proper conservation programmes. Monumental fountains in cast iron, complete with decorations and statues, are not a common sight. When we consider that these are concentrated in an area that barely covers half the territory of Abruzzo, we realize that this is a phenomenon that deserves investigation.
The results of our research, presented in this issue, include mapping of the artefacts, rich photographic documentation revealing details of the fountains and their state of deterioration, and a history of each one, reconstructed through consultation of the sources, many of which are held in the Archives of the Foundation.
These fountains have suggested, moreover, the creation of a tourist itinerary. This aims primarily to draw attention to the fountains themselves, but at the same time it provides an opportunity to take a look at the historical-artistic and natural features characterizing the 23 towns concerned. Enjoy your reading, and above all enjoy your trip.
